The breed is named for the Samoyede people, a nomadic tribe that lived on the tundra of northern Russia and Siberia, near the Arctic Circle. The tribe used the dogs they called bjelkiers to herd reindeer, pull sledges, and occasionally hunt bears. They incorporated this breed into their daily lives since antiquity. It's believed that the Samoyede's migrated with their dogs to Siberia, north of the Artic Circle, in the first millennium.
Samoyeds generally live for 12 to 14 years.
Generally males weigh between 45-65 pounds and are 21-23.5 inches in height. Females
are generally 35-50 pounds and are 19-21 inches in height.
The Samoyeds have a profuse double coat, with a longer coat of harsh hair and a soft, thick, wooly undercoat. They generally shed quite a bit all of the time, more so during shedding season, which occurs once or twice a year. They generally need to be brushed at least every other day to prevent matting.
Yes! Samoyeds make excellent family companions, especially with children and other pets. They are very active, social, friendly, loving dogs.
